Peter J. King established this Foundation in 1985 and has contributed substantial financial resources to carry out its mission.
The Peter J. King Family Foundation’s focus is to provide "brick-and-mortar"
facilities to local communities and organizations whose activities are dedicated
to the improvement of children’s health, education and welfare and the
family environment.
Highlights of Foundation Activities
- Salvation Army King Family Foundation Corps Community Center
This center is located in Northeast Minneapolis and provides complete social services, emergency services and family-related programming for the surrounding community. The facilities also include a food shelf, day care center, day camp and after school programming areas, classrooms and a gymnasium.
- Peter J. King Family Health Center
The Foundation has sponsored the construction of the United Family Practice Health Center which focuses on providing health care to the uninsured, under insured and underserved residents in the St. Paul area and is affiliated with United Hospitals. This new facility will replace and increase the capacity of the current outdated clinic from 45,000 patient visits to 60,000 and will be staffed by the United Family Practice group of physicians.
A unique feature of the United Family Practice group of physicians is its nationally recognized Family Medicine Residency program which trains doctors who will care for the underserved population of St. Paul and elsewhere. - King Center for Medical Education and Nurses Training of Ilula-Tanzania
Located near Iringa Tanzania this center is composed of several building which will be used to train Tanzanian doctors, nurses, midwives and other medical support personnel in up-to-date medical techniques and equipment. The center will also provide a venue where U.S. doctors can train local health care professionals in the current treatment of the most prevalent African diseases. It is adjacent to the Ilula hospital which serves the needs of a poor but growing region in central Tanzania. The center includes residences for health care professionals, as well as facilities for a nursing school and a medical education center.
- King Family Foundation Child Development Center – Citadel
Community Center
Located at the Salvation Army's St. Paul Citadel Community Center in Saint Paul's West Seventh Street Neighborhood, this facility provides day care and pre-school education for approximately 40 local children, ages 18 months to six years.
- King Family Foundation Child Development Center – Ober Center
Located at Union Gospel Mission's Ober Center in Saint Paul's Frogtown Neighborhood and operated by Bethel University, this facility provides day care and pre-school education to approximately 50 local children, from infant up to six years.
- King Leadership Camp
Operated by YMCA at its Camp St. Croix in Hudson, Wisconsin, this program provides three-year summer camping scholarships to needy children aimed at developing leadership and life skills in children from 13 to 17 years of age. It currently serves over 100 campers and will expand to serve almost 200 campers by 2008.
- Joint Farm Program with Tumaini University – Iringa Tanzania
This pilot program with Tumaini University is to determine the feasibility of commercializing 1000-2000 acres of farm land in the Iringa region incorporating a farm cooperative program to train local tribal villagers to more effectively farm family and village plots.
- King Family Foundation Tanzanian Scholarship Fund
The Foundation in conjunction with the Tanzanian Government funded a three year pilot program to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of using private funds to educate needy talented school children who would be denied schooling because of the lack of government funds. It has provided scholarships for 2950 students over a three year period and this program is currently being evaluated.
- Incarnation Lutheran Church Youth Center
The Foundation has sponsored construction of a multi-purpose youth center located within the Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview, MN. This center is available for use by non-denominational community organizations and institutions as well as members of the church.
- Expansion of the Image Middle School – Image Tanzania
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania sponsors the Image secondary school, located among several tribal villages in Central Tanzania and provides scholarships to Tanzanians grades 8 through 12. The Foundation funded the expansion of this school which includes an administration building, additional classrooms and living and recreational facilities. It has increased the school’s capacity to 750 students from 300 students and has allowed it to become an accredited high school.
- King Family Foundation - Viking Children's Fund Scholarships
Operated by the Minnesota Viking Children's Fund. This predecessor program to current Vikings children’s fund activities provided college scholarships to dozens of participants in the Minnesota Vikings Academic Team program. Scholarships were awarded to High School Seniors based upon economic need who showed high academic achievement and strong leadership potential.
